Do you have problems memorizing a Polish word? Here are some tips that will make learning Polish words more effective:
- Try learning two things at the same time: a word and its use in the context (sentence). Nothing good will come out of the fact that you will know the word but you won't know how to use it. Such a solution (a word plus its use in the context) has been used in Warsaw public busses in Poland to teach Poles English.
- Rhyme. If you cannot memorize a certain word try rhyming it with the one you already know (not necessarily a Polish one!).
- Try using a melody. You cannot say a certain word because you don't remember it? Sing it! For those who have problems with memorizing the names of Polish months I recommend this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkF38baJ_cM.
- If you want to learn the names of things that surround you, e.g. office supplies, furniture etc,. you can put sticky notes on them with their Polish names.
- Tell a story. If you want to learn words connected with one particular topic, e.g. work, make up a story about it in which you will use those words. The words that create a bigger whole, in this respect a story, will stay longer in your mind than those without context.
